EVANSTON, Ill. – Cane Broome scored a game-high 26 points in Sacred Heart's 103-67 loss at Northwestern on Monday night in Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats shot 61 percent from the field, making 15 three-pointers, to hand the Pioneers their ninth straight loss and improve to 11-1.
With the game within one point, 12-11, after the two teams made eight of the first ten shots in the opening 5:03, Northwestern held SHU to just six points over the next 10:44 to take command of the game. Tre Demps made a three-pointer with 4:47 to go, capping 11 unanswered and highlighting the 22-6 run that put the Wildcats up 34-17.
Sacred Heart outscored Northwestern from there, beginning with five straight points to pull the closest it would get the remainder of the game, 34-22, on Broome's trifecta at the 3:36 mark. After Northwestern scored the next four points, the Pioneers would get as close as 13 three times, including when Sean Hoehn drained a triple just nine seconds before the break. The Wildcats would steal the momentum heading into the half though, as Bryant McIntosh drilled a contested 22-foot three at the buzzer to take a 48-32 lead into the locker room.
NU built upon that momentum with the first five points out of the locker room, but SHU would respond with a 9-2 run to get as close it would get in the second half, 55-41, on Hoehn's three with 17:06 left. From there it was all Wildcats, as they went on a 23-5 run, ending with 13 unanswered, to go ahead 78-46 on Gavin Skelly's layup at the 10:36 mark.
In addition to shooting 61 percent to Sacred Heart's 40 percent, the Wildcats bench outscored the SHU bench 40-4. Northwestern also had a 38-16 advantage in the paint and scored 21 points off of 13 Pioneer turnovers. NU dished out 30 assists on 36 made field goals.
Broome's 26 points included a career-high 5-11 form three-point range, helping Sacred Heart to a season-high ten trifectas. Quincy McKnight was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 15 points and a team-high five rebounds. Tevin Falzon had nine points, adding team-highs of five rebounds and a career-high four assists. Hoehn also had four assists in his first career start, as the Pioneers dished out a season-high 14.
Five Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Alex Olah's 21, 15 of which came before halftime. Demps added 17 points on a team-high 4-6 from beyond the arch. McIntosh finished with a game-high ten assists, and was one point shy of a double double, while Nathan Taphorn pulled down a game-high six rebounds to go along with 11 points.
Sacred Heart wraps up its non-conference schedule one week from today with a 7 pm tip at Hofstra on December 28.
