HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 16, 2015)—The Sacred Heart bowling team finished tenth at the Stormin' Ladyjack Classic hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University in Houston, Texas this past weekend.
Sacred Heart had a rough start in baker style matches on Friday dropping the first two matches of the tournament to perennially strong teams Vanderbilt (996-877) and Central Missouri (1,066-922). The Pioneers finally captured their first win in the day's third match against Monmouth (965-918) before suffering another pair of losses to Sam Houston State (1,093-968) and Tulane (988-926). They ended the day on a high note picking up a 1,058-959 win over fellow Northeast Conference member St. Francis Brooklyn.
SHU faced the Terriers again to open Sunday's team-style games. This time SFBK came out on top (1,033-919). But the Pioneers rebounded with three straight wins. The streak culminated with the highlight of the weekend when Sacred Heart downed No. 1 Nebraska 951-896. SHU stumbled again against the host Jacks (1,033-935) before finishing qualifying matches with a 988-902 win over St. Francis Brooklyn. Their 6-6 record had the Pioneers seeded tenth heading into match-play.
Up against the No. 9 seeded Terriers in the first round, Sacred Heart won the first two games in the best-of-seven format 197-179 and 233-157 before seeing the third slip away 221-215. They dropped the next 198-159 before sneaking a 227-222 win in the fifth game. St. Francis Brooklyn won one more pushing the match to a decisive seventh game, but the Pioneers came out of it victorious with a 208-183 win in the final game.
The Pioneers moved on to face UMES in the next round. The Hawks took the first three games before Sacred Heart snagged a 245-236 win, but ultimately UMES took the match 4-1 sending SHU back down to face the Terriers once again.
Sacred Heart took the first game 223-214, but fell in the next three straight before snapping SFBK's streak with a 206-195 win. They couldn't push the Terriers any further though and dropped the match 4-2 with the 216-210 loss in the sixth game.
