NEW HAVEN – Freshman Francisco Del Valle Diaz recorded his first career dual victory in the Sacred Heart University men's tennis, 6-1, loss to Davidson Friday evening at Yale University. Also victorious were Matt Dean and Brian Power, who teamed together to pick up a doubles victory for the Pioneers, who fall to 0-5.
Del Valle Diaz's win came in dramatic three set fashion at sixth singles. He edged Alex Howard in the tiebreaker by the slimmest of margins, 11-9. The match was sent to a third set after Del Valle Diaz dropped the second set, 6-3, following winning the first by the same score.
Karan Narula was on the other side of a three-setter, falling in the final set, 6-3, to Ricky Saad. Narula opened the match with a, 6-3, triumph in the first, only to get swept in the second.
Dean and Power edged J.B. Gough and Jordan Hart, 8-7, in first singles to record their first dual victory of the campaign. Justin Pagan and Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen fought hard to earn the doubles point for SHU, but eventually fell, 8-6, to Shamael Chaudhry and Saad in the third flight.
Sacred Heart continues play on Sunday with an 11 am match at Army.
