Women's Golf In Third Place After Opening Round of NEC Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Led by top-five rounds by freshman Abigail Hood (Gloucester, Mass.) and sophomore Ellen Nighbor (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), the Sacred Heart women's golf team is in third place after the first round of the Northeast Conference Championship Friday at LPGA International.
Hood was even par through her first five holes Friday, including a birdie on the par-four second. She was even par through the first nine holes, but bogeyed three of the first four holes on the back nine. After a bogey on 16 put her at +4, Hood scored par on 17 and birdied 18 to finish the day with a +3 75. Hood is tied for third entering Saturday's second round after posting her lowest round of the season. Nighbor had a birdie on the front nine, posting a one-over 37 at the turn. The sophomore was four-over on the back nine, posting a birdie on the 18th to finish with a round of +5 77 to put her in a tie for fifth.
Senior Kelsey Hayward (Seekonk, Mass.) put herself in 18th place Friday with a round of +10 82. She birdied her first hole of the round and reached the turn at +4. Alejandra Perez (Zaragoza, Spain) was +5 through nine holes, but a double and a triple bogey on the back nine put her at +14 for her round. Perez is currently tied for 25th at +14.
The Pioneers finished the opening round 32 strokes over par, two shots behind Central Connecticut for second place. Wagner leads the tournament at +26.
The second round begins Saturday morning.
