NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Sacred Heart women's fencing team travelled to New Haven on Saturday for its annual contest with Yale.
Eight Pioneers posted victories in a thrilling 14-13 win over the Elis. In the first round, Yale dominated and took a 6-3 lead with the Pioneers only able secure one win in each weapon. Sacred Heart bounced back with determination in the second round, going 7-2 and taking a 10-8 lead. Epee was dominant with a three wins in this round. Epee continued their excellence with two wins in the third round and coupled with key victories from Mackenna Lamphere in saber and a match-clinching win from Bailey Partridge in foil, the Pioneers secured the hard earned victory.
Epee lead the way with six victories on the day, with two wins each from Mia Volpe, Carly Glowacky and Caitlin Stanton. Foil and saber each contributed four on the day, with Bailey Partridge and CJ McCarter in foil and Mackenna Lamphere in saber each adding two wins. Single wins from Julia Greene and Hasoni Austin in saber helped get the team to the magic 14 victory total.
"This was such a great win for us today", said head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "Based on USFA ratings Yale should have handled us without much problem but we fought extremely hard and had fantastic team spirit today. Mia Volpe did an awesome job leading the epee squad and her dominant wins (5-1 and 5-2) were keys to our confidence. Partridge and McCarter continue to be very solid in foil and Bailey did an amazing job of mixing up her tactics in her decisive 5-3 win over Zhou to clinch the match. After a few jitters in her first bout Mackenna Lamphere was very precise and clean in dominating (5-1 and 5-2) her final two bouts. Overall this win and the one over Brown are the two most satisfying we have had this season".
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, February 6 at Smith College where they will be competing in the final Northeast Conference weekend of the season. Action will begin at 10 AM.
