SHU Goes One-Two in Two events at Yale Classic

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Pioneer men won gold and silver in two events, while Kayla Lawrence's performance highlighted the women's side of the competition, as the Sacred Heart track and field team competed at the 34th Annual Yale University Intercollegiate Classic held at Coxe Cage on Saturday.
Crossing back-to-back in the 60 Meter Dash were Quaheem Dufane and Daniel Graw. Dufane edged his teammate by .01 second for the top spot on the podium, dropping an IC4A and New England qualifying mark of 6.96 to move into second place in the Norheast Conference. Graw's time of 6.97 was also under both the IC4A and New England standard, and currently ranks fourth in the conference. He later earned a second medal on the day, crossing with a time of 22.59 in the 200 Meter Dash to win bronze.
Also taking first and second were Sean Ferguson and Trevor Guerrera in the One Mile Run, with Ferguson moving into first place in the NEC by running a New England qualifying time of 4:15.84. Guerrera ran new a personal best, 4:17.52, to move into second place in the league rankings.
Lawrence was the lone ECAC qualifier for the women and now stands third in the NEC rankings after recording a time of 1:15.72 in the 500 Meters. Also under the New England standard, she missed out on a spot on the podium by just .52 seconds. She also ran the fastest leg, 58.3, on the 4x400 Meter Relay team, which now ranks fourth in the NEC with a time of 4:03.33. The team consisted of Lawrence, Taylor Ann D'Agostino, Camille McKenzie and Nicole Bartosch.
Individually, Bartosch won medals in the Long Jump and 60 Meter Hurdles, while placing sixth in the High Jump. Currently atop the NEC rankings in both events, she recorded a mark of 17'8" (5.38) in the Long Jump and cleared 5'3" (1.6) in the High Jump. See first ran a New England qualifying time of 9.05 in the preliminaries of the Hurdles before besting that time by crossing in 9.02 in the finals.
Also winning medals were Hannah Cook, Alexandra Kaeslin and Selina Sampieri. Cook recorded a final mark of 36'4" (11.07) in the Triple Jump to take over the lead in the in the NEC rankings while earning silver. Kaeslin now holds the NEC lead in two events, as she set an eight second personal best in the mile, 5:12.3, to win bronze. Sempieri also earned bronze, clearing 10'10'' (3.30) in the Pole Vault, currently ranking fourth in the NEC.
Sacred Heart student-athletes will compete in two events next weekend beginning with the Harvard University Multi-Events, hosted at Gordon Track in Boston, next Friday and Saturday at 11 am. Also on Saturday is the University of Albany Great Dane Classic, held at the Ocean Breeze Center, site of the 2016 NEC Championships, beginning at 12:30 pm.
NEC Leaders
- In the 3000 Meters, Timothy Loehner ran a new personal best of 8:52.58, a time good for fourth in NEC rankings.
- In the throws, Mike Kearns threw a New England qualifying mark in the shot put of 49'8" (15.15), missing out on the podium by one spot. Teammates Dave Roy IV and Christian Turner were sixth and seventh, with marks of 47'11¼" (14.61) and 47'6½" (14.49). The trio currently ranks third, fourth and fifth in the league.
- Jennifer Hahne bested her personal best in the 3000 Meters, running 10:16.35 to move into second place in the NEC rankings while also qualifying for the New England Championships. Next for SHU was Shannon Hickey, who ran a personal best of 10:23.18. Hickey ranks fourth in the conference, while teammates Meghan Hutch, Molly Barker and Kate Svensen rank eighth, ninth and tenth, respecrively, after all three surpassed their personal bests.
- Amy Veglianti cleared 10'4'' (3.15) in the Pole Vault, which currently ranks sixth in the league
- Victoria Pileggi made her debut in the Triple Jump with a mark of 33'10" (10.31), good for seventh in the NEC rankings.
Other Men's Highlights
- The men's 4x400 Meter Relay team earned silver, running 3:22.56 with a team consisting of Sebastian Pierre, Brenden Twumasi-Ankrah, Daniel Elia and Ralph Gangi. Pierre and Twumasi-Ankrah had the fastest legs on the squad, both running a 49.8 split.
Other Women's Highlights
- Mareena DiMilia highlighted the women's throws again with a season best and New England qualifying Shot Put mark of 41'8¾" (12.72). She also placed fourth in the Weight Throw, with another New England qualifier of 51'10"(15.8).
