NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A day after dropping a 4-3 thriller to Drexel, the Sacred Heart men's tennis team was on the other side of a one-point decision, knocking off previously unbeaten Colgate on Sunday afternoon at Yale. Brian Power won both of his matches for the second day in a row, finishing the weekend a perfect 4-0, as the victory moves SHU back above .500 at 4-3.
For the second time this weekend, Sacred Heart took the doubles point, with Karan Narula and Derek Chapman clinching it after a 7-5 triumph at third doubles. Power and Matt Dean put the Pioneers in position to earn the point after winning their third consecutive match, 6-4, improving to a 6-1 at first doubles in dual play.
With the first five singles matches ending in straight sets, resulting in a 3-3 tie, the match was decided in the lone three-setter of the afternoonIt was Power coming through for SHU at first singles, bouncing back from a 6-3 second set loss to take the clincher 6-2. He won the first set 6-4, in what was his third straight victory for his team-best fourth dual win.
Also capturing his fourth dual match of the season was Cory Seltman, who extended his winning streak to four with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at sixth singles. At fifth singles, Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen edged his opponent 6-4, 7-5 to set the stage for Power.
Sacred Heart hits the road next weekend, traveling to Army West Point on Friday to take on Marist at 12 pm.
