Sacred Heart Picks up Second Straight Win with Sweep of Hartford

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team won its second consecutive match on Saturday evening, sweeping Hartford 7-0 at Yale. The Pioneers were one doubles match shy of winning all ten en route to improving to 3-4.
SHU did not drop a set in singles play, which included Mariah Wardius picking up her first career win as a Pioneer with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at sixth singles. Katie DeReinzo won her third straight match by defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-1 at first singles for her team best eight victory of the season. Olivia Podsiebierski joins her as the only other Pioneer over .500 as she is now 5-4 after sweeping her opponent 6-4, 6-0 at third singles.
Also picking up wins were Paige Olson, Taylor Gurda and Claudia Ruiz. The win for Olson was in her first match at second singles this season. Gurda improved to 4-1 at fourth singles, while Ruiz's win was her fourth of the year, tied for third on the team with Olson.
DeRienzo, Gurda, Podsiebierski and Olson also were victorious at doubles as well. DeRienzo and Gurda paired for a 6-1 victory at first doubles for their second straight win together, while Olson and Podsiebierski and Olson improve to 5-3 together after a 6-2 decision at second doubles. Podsiebierki and DeRienzo lead Sacred Heart with ten and nine doubles wins this season, respectively.
SHU takes next weekend off before taking its Spring Break trip to Puerto Rico, where it will begin play with Valparaiso on March 6.
