Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – On the strength of a three-goal second period, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team swept the Canisius Golden Griffins after a 4-3 victory Saturday night at HARBORCENTER.
The Pioneers moved into seventh place in Atlantic Hockey with 23 points with two games remaining in the regular season.
In the first period, Canisius (10-17-5, 10-11-5 AHC) opened the scoring with 11:14 remaining when after Sacred Heart failed to clear the zone, Felix Chamberland took a pass from Mike Sabatini at the top of the crease and beat Brett Magnus for a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers evened the score with 9:10 left as Mitch Nylen's pass from behind the net found Evan Jasper for an easy backhand goal.
Sacred Heart (12-16-4, 10-13-3 AHC) took a 2-1 lead just 2:30 into the second period when Justin Danforth took the puck off a rebound and blasted a shot over Canisius goalie Simon Hofley's right shoulder and into the net. The Pioneers added to the lead with 9:51 remaining when Jasper scored his second goal of the game after taking the puck from beyond the blue line and skating in and beating Hofley with a backhand. Sacred Heart completed the scoring in a dominate second period when Adam Durkee took a long pass from Coltyn Hansen and fed the puck into an open net for a 4-1 lead.
The third period was scoreless until Canisius scored with 1:21 left as Jimmy Mazza beat everyone to a rebound and tucked the puck past Magnus to cut the lead to 4-2. Ryan Schmelzer pulled the Griffs within one, 4-3, with 31 seconds remaining when his slapshot from the top of the circle hit the back of the net. Sacred Heart held on from there and left Buffalo with a road sweep of Canisius for the first time since January 13-14, 2006.
With the win, Sacred Heart secured its first road sweep of Canisius since Jan. 13-14, 2006. For the game, Sacred Heart was 0-for-5 on the power play and Canisius was 0-for-3. SHU outshot Canisius 33-32. Jasper tied a career-high with two goals as Danforth also had two points on a goal and an assist.
Sacred Heart returns home Friday night, February 26 vs. Holy Cross for Senior Night. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
