Taylor Moreland (Kenosha, Wis.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Sarah Erban (Attleboro, Mass.) stopped 22 shots as the visiting Sacred Heart University Pioneers shut out the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 5-0, in non-conference women's ice hockey action Wednesday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gave the Pioneers, now 8-6-1 overall, a sweep of the teams' two-game series and extended their winning streak to five games. The Huskies fell for the fourth straight game sliding to 3-9-0 on the season.
Moreland gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead just 2:10 into the game firing home the rebound of a shot from rookie
Jayne Lewis (Troy, Ill.). USM freshman goalie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stopped Lewis' initial shot, but Moreland was in the right spot to collect the rebound and score her 12th goal of the season.
Padgett matched Erban save for save over the remainder of the first period, and all of the second period, to keep the score at 1-0 going into the third period. The Pioneers erupted in the final 20 minutes for four goals to put the game away. Junior
Cassandra Hanlon (Rowley, Mass.) scored at 3:39 with a long, fluttering shot through a screen that eluded Padgett. Sophomore
Lilly Cleary (Norwell, Mass.) and Moreland scored 11 seconds apart (5:50, 6:01) to double the lead and effectively put the game away. Junior
Meghan Kebalka (Lebanon, N.H.) tallied the final goal at 12:55. Lewis finished the game with three assists to top the scoresheet for the Pioneers, and Kebalka had a goal and an assist. Junior
Carly Radovich (Hopkinton, Mass.) also had a multi-point game earning two assists.
Erban earned her third shutout of the season and remains undefeated at 5-0-0. Padgett, who lost for the first time as a collegian, made 23 saves. The Huskies are off until January 13 when they travel to the University of New England. The Pioneers are back in action this Friday and Saturday playing in the Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic at Saint Michael's College.
