Ashley Cherry, Sophie Witek Star for Women's Fencing at NEIFC Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team saw some standout performances from junior Ashley Cherry and first-year Sophie Witek to highlight the Pioneers' efforts at the 2020 NEIFC Championships held at Vassar College on Saturday.
Cherry was terrific in the individual section of the tournament, as she earned gold in the epee individual portion of competition. Advancing through five rounds of round-robin play, Cherry advanced to the single-elimination group and won all three rounds to earn gold in the epee.
Witek also took on a starring role, as like Cherry, she advanced through the round-robin stage to compete in the single-elimination tournament. After victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Witek fell in the title match but still earned a runner-up finish and silver medal for her efforts.
