
Pioneers Let Game Slip Away at Howard, 22-17

WASHINGTON DC – The Sacred Heart University football team could not hold onto a halftime lead at Howard. The Bison scored 19 unanswered points to beat the Pioneers, 22-17, on Saturday.

After a scoreless third quarter, Howard got a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Quinton Williams hit Kasey Hawthorne on a 38-yard touchdown pass with 2:05 remaining to put the hosts ahead.
Quarterback Marquez McCray got the Pioneers down to the Howard 21-yard line, but his last-second attempt sailed out of the back of the endzone.
After the first quarter, the Pioneers could not maintain their offensive prowess. Sacred Heart was only 3-of-12 on third down in the final three quarters. SHU had 252 yards in the last 45 minutes after 144 in the opening frame.
Howard took the opening kick and got on the board with a field goal, but the Pioneers answered quickly with a five-play scoring drive that only took 89 seconds.
Malik Grant rushed for 25 yards during the drive and Ed Cuddahy caught a 19-yard pass to set up the Pioneers up the seven yards. McCray called his own number and scored his second touchdown of the season.
Sacred Heart added another touchdown on its next possession. Sophomore Jalen Madison did most of the work, rushing for 45 yards, including a five-yard score to put SHU up 14-3. It was the first touchdown of the Stratford, Conn. native's career.
Grant crossed the century mark for the second time in three games, rushing for 111 yards, including a career-long 35-yard dash. Madison had the best game of his young career, carrying the ball 11 times for 79 yards.
