Pioneers sweep Holy Cross but fall at Siena in weekend play

LATHAM, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team picked up a convincing 7-0 win at Holy Cross on Saturday, but fell, 6-1, at Siena on Sunday as the Pioneers move to 2-1 to kick off the season.

SHU dominated at Holy Cross by not dropping a single set. All three double pairs picked up victories including a 6-0 win from Kim Fenton and Ana Sofia Angeles Sánchez at third. In singles, the Pioneers were victorious in all six spots as each won in straight sets.

On Sunday, the women fell to Siena for their first loss of the season. The doubles pair of Aina Garriga and Fenton pulled out a narrow 7-6 victory when they forced a tiebreak, 5-0.

Sophomore Katsiaryna Starastsenka picked up the lone singles win of the day. The Belarus native fell in the first set, 5-7, but came through, 6-1, and, 10-4, for the win at first singles. Starastsenka has yet to fall in a singles match as she is 3-0 so far this season.
