
Witek Qualifies for NCAA Fencing Regionals

Captain Sophie Witek will compete in the saber
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — As the lone qualifier Sophie Witek for the Sacred Heart University women's fencing team, the senior will travel to Vassar College for the NCAA Regionals on March 13. Witek will compete individually for the saber.
The captain finished the season with a 28-5 record and an 84.85-win percentage. She landed 149 touches on Northeast Fencing Conference opponents and only received 36.
"Sophie did a great job this season," head coach Yury Molchan said. "She is growing and getting new experience, so I am very proud."
Typically dominating in the saber, Witek switched weapons in the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet hosted by Columbia on Feburary 16 and went 2-1 in the epee's final round against New York University.
At the UPenn Invitational on January 22, she dominated the saber with a 7-4 bout record with a 3-0 stint against the host team and 2-1 versus John Hopkins.
Witek posted two undefeated rounds at the second NFC meet on February 5 for the 7-2 triumph over Boston University and UMass.
Among all the competitors from the competing Northeast schools, twelve standouts with qualifying winning records after the three Robin Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championship on March 24-27 at Notre Dame in Indiana.
