Rouquette defeats El Chaib on first playoff hole for medalist honors.
MILFORD, Conn. – The only suspense on the second day of the SHU Spring Invitational was which member of the Sacred Heart University women's golf team was going to take home the individual title. The Pioneers rolled to a 37-stroke victory on Tuesday at Great River Golf Club.
The Pioneers posted a 36-hole score of 619 (308-311). Hartford jumped ahead of Fairfield for second place at 656.
First round leader Margot Rouquette came back to the pack with a 77 in the second 18 holes. Sophomore Chantal El Chaib matched Rouquette's 73 on day two to force a playoff as both posted a 150. On the first playoff hole, Rouquette rolled in a par putt to claim medalist honors.
Junior Kailee Welch was three strokes better on Tuesday as her 78 moved her into a tie for seventh at 159 (81-78). Rookie Maya Robilio cracked the top 10 with a 160 (77-83). Junior Chelsea Thakkar held onto 13th at 165 (82-83).
Playing as an individual, rookie Jensie Nicholas shaved three strokes off her day one total to finish 15th at 169 (86-83). The biggest improvement from the first round to the second came from senior Christina Massei as she lowered her score by nine strokes to tie for 22nd at 175 (92-83).
Completing the individual entrees were Kerry Kline (192), Mollie Lewis (198), Cora Koproski (199), Emma Preissing and Charlotte Huntington (205).
Next week SHU travels to the LPGA International Course – where the Pioneers won the SHU Spring Break Invitational – for the NEC Championship, April 20-22.
