Pioneers looking for first title since 2017
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It's been five years since the Sacred Heart University women's golf team captured the Northeast Conference trophy, but head coach Matt McGreevy has a squad that is more than capable. The Pioneers start their quest for a championship on Wednesday.
The 54-hole NEC Tournament is back at the LPGA International Jones Course. The Pioneers have already had success on the Jones track after winning the SHU Spring Break Invitational there in March. The Pioneers are coming off their fourth tournament title and eighth top-three finish at the Sacred Heart Spring Invitational.
Sacred Heart has finished runner-up to Fairleigh Dickinson the last three seasons and four of the last five after winning the title in 2017. The Knights pulled away in round two last season on their way to victory.
McGreevy may have the best one-two punch in the conference in sophomores Margot Rouquette and Chantal El Chaib. Rouquette leads the team with a 76.2 strokes per round average and El Chaib is close behind at 76.6.
The two dueled at the SHU Spring Invitational with Rouquette parring the first playoff hole to earn the victory and her second medalist honor. The Mountiron, France native has six top-10 finishes with her best round of the year coming at the Navy Fall Invitational. At last year's championship she fired a 74 in the final round to place third and wrap up Rookie of the Year honors.
El Chaib is having a strong spring with a victory at the SHU Spring Break Invitational then a second-place finish a week ago. She carded her lowest round of the year at the LPGA Jones course, firing a two-under par 70. A native of Abu Dhabi, UAE, El Chaib also has a half dozen top-10 results.
Just a stroke back of El Chaib is junior Kailee Welch with a 77.8 average. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native was named NEC Player of the Month in November after winning the SHU Fall Invitational thanks to a 71 in the opening round. Welch finished seventh at the 2021 NEC Championship with a 230.
Getting her first taste of postseason action is first-year Maya Robilio. Ranked fourth on the team with an 81.1 average, she has come on during the spring to post a pair of top-10 finishes. Robilio was the round-one leader at the SHU Spring Break Invite after a career-best 69 in the opening 18 holes. A 77 during day one of the SHU Spring Invitational helped her finish eighth.
Junior Chelsea Thakkar is accustomed to success at the conference championship after tying for eighth a year ago. She comes into this year's league summit with an average of 83.4. The Mumbai, India native started the year with an eighth-place finish at the Hartford Fall Invitational and was 13th last week at the SHU event.
