Four Pioneers finish in top 10.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sacred Heart University women's golf team grabbed the lead after the first round of the Northeast Conference Championship and never looked back. On Friday the Pioneers sealed their first title since 2017 at the LPGA International Jones Course.
Sacred Heart only got better as the tournament went on, saving its best round for last and a winning score of 923 (315-306-302). The Pioneers bested defending champion Fairleigh Dickinson by 15 strokes. Wagner and Merrimack tied for third at 944.
"It was truly a team effort as a different person stepped up each round to help us win the championship," SHU head coach Matt McGreevy said. "I couldn't be happier for the team as this is something they set as a goal in the fall, put in the work throughout the year and came through when it mattered."
Four of the five Pioneers finished inside the top 10 with three tying for sixth. Sophomore Margot Rouquette was first in the clubhouse at 231 (80-75-76). Classmate Chantal El Chaib birdied the last hole for her 231 (78-76-77). Rookie Maya Robilio got better every day, posting a 76 in the final round to get to 231 (78-77-76).
Junior Kailee Welch saved her best round for last as she posted a 73 that included a one-under par 35 on the back nine. She finished tied for ninth at 234 (79-82-73). Classmate Chelsea Thakkar finished in the top 25 with a 244 (86-78-80).
The NCAA Regional is slated for May 9-11 at six sites throughout the country. The selection show is Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
