Lim captures individual title
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The last time the Sacred Heart University men's golf team won the Northeast Conference championship it was at the end of three titles in four years. Head coach Matt McGreevy's squad that features a sophomore and three rookies maybe starting another run as the Pioneers won the NEC crown on Sunday at the LPGA International Hills Course
A great second round on Saturday catapulted SHU into a tie for the lead going into the final round. The Pioneers fired a 299 during the third round for a 902 (309-294-299) total and a five-stroke victory over LIU and Saint Francis.
"I'm really happy for the guys because they showed a lot of resilience to win this championship," McGreevy said. "After the first day we could have packed it in, but we came out on Saturday and put together the round we needed it win."
Bringing home individual medalist honors was sophomore Marcus Lim. He was one-under on the front nine then came home in even par for a winning score of 217 (77-69-71) that was four strokes ahead of the field. Lim is the fifth Pioneer to win the individual championship.
Knocking four shots off his final 18 holes was rookie Eoin Freeman as he moved up eight spots into a tie for seventh place with a 227 (77-77-73). Senior Nathan Kim kept getting better as the tournament progressed. He was three strokes better on Sunday with an even-par 72 for a 299 (82-75-72) total to finish 11th.
Blake Moreno finished inside the top 25 with a three-day score of 234 (78-73-83). Rounding out the scores was first-year Jonah Camarillo with a 54-hole total of 239 (77-79-83).
The NCAA Selection show is Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
