Pioneers improved by 14 strokes on Wednesday.
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Every day of the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Sacred Heart University women's golf team showed improvement. The Pioneers saved their best round for last during Wednesday's final round at the Stanford University Golf Course.
Sacred Heart cut 14 strokes – the single-biggest improvement of the day - off its total for a 300 in the last round for a 54-hole score of 938 (324-314-300). Southern California won the regional at 837, followed by LSU and the host Cardinal at 845. Purdue beat Northwestern in a playoff for the fourth and final spot at the NCAA Championship.
"We got better each round and shot our second-lowest score of the season on the last day, so it was good to end the season on a high note," SHU head coach Matt McGreevy said. "It was a good learning experience for them to come out here and play against some of the best team in the country."
Pacing the Pioneers was sophomore Margot Rouquette as she posted a one-over 72 to finish tied for 47th at 227 (79-76-72). Classmate Chantal El Chaib was six-strokes better on Wednesday, posting a 73 to move up two spots at 234 (82-79-73).
Tying El Chaib's three-day total was junior Kailee Welch after a final round 77 for her 234 (82-75-77). Also knocking six strokes off her round was rookie Maya Robilio for a score of 243 (81-84-78). Equaling her second-lowest round of the season was Chelsea Thakkar with a 78 in the final round.
McGreevy's squad should have a good shot at getting back to the regional in 2023 as he returns all six players who played in the NCAA tournament.
