FIRST TEE
Sacred Heart earned its spot in the NCAA Regional by winning the Northeast Conference Tournament. It's the Pioneers' first trip to the NCAA Tournament since the 2011 season.
Sophomore Marcus Lim earned NEC Player of the Year. He is the second SHU golfer in a row to earn the award after Sapktak Talwar. Lim will not compete at the regional as he is with the Malaysian contingent at the South-East Asian (SEA) Games.
Head coach Matt McGreevy swept the Coach of the Year awards, adding the men's honor. It's the second time he's picked up the men's Coach of the Year (2011).
In addition to earning Player of the Year, Lim also garnered First Team All-NEC. Nathan Kim was a Second Team selection.
SHU READY FOR FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT SINCE 2011
For the first time in over a decade, the Sacred Heart University men's golf team is back in the postseason. The Pioneers, champions of the Northeast Conference, will make the short trip east to New Haven for the NCAA Regional at the Yale University Golf Course. Sacred Heart hasn't been in the NCAA Tournament since 2011, the first year that Matt McGreevy coached both the men's and women's programs. In 2011, Sacred Heart played at the Central Regional in Indianapolis, Ind. Junior Joseph Serrantino finished in a tie for 40th place with a 223.
PIONEERS RALLY TO CLAIM CONFERENCE CROWN
After a slow start, Sacred Heart got hot in the final two rounds to claim its first NEC title in over a decade. A great second round on Saturday catapulted SHU into a tie for the lead going into the final round. The Pioneers fired a 299 during the third round for a 902 (309-294-299) total and a five-stroke victory over LIU and Saint Francis. Bringing home individual medalist honors was Marcus Lim. He was one-under on the front nine then came home in even par for a winning score of 217 (77-69-71.
LIM, McGREEVY AND KIM PICK UP NEC HONORS
The top team in the NEC, Sacred Heart picked up pair of major NEC awards. Marcus Lim was named Player of the Year while Matt McGreevy earned Coach of the Year. In addition, Lim was also a member of the First Team All-NEC. Senior Nathan Kim picked up Second Team All-NEC. Lim is the fifth Pioneer to earn the league's top honor. A five-time NEC Player of the Week selection, he led the NEC with a 71.6 strokes per round. Kim has the distinction of earning All-NEC honors every year they were awarded. He was a Second Team selection in 2009 and 2021 after no honors were given out in 2020. This season he ranks second on the team with a 74.3 stroke average.
PIONEERS HAVE RECENT SUCCESS AT YALE
The Pioneers tied for fourth at the Yale Spring Invitational on April 16. Just missing out on medalist honors was Lim as he posted identical scores of 69 for a two-under total of 138 that was one stroke off the lead. Rookies Eoin Freeman and Jonah Camarillo each finished in the top 25.
