FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University men's basketball head coach Anthony Latina announced a new team member, signing 16-year-old Michael Fagan, Jr. through Team IMPACT.

Michael, who was diagnosed with lymphoma last year, was officially introduced at a signing day press conference on Wednesday, June 15, at the Pitt Center on the university campus. Matched with the team since September 2021, Michael participates in activities with the men's basketball team including games, practices and other team events.

"Michael is a positive young man and we're excited to have him in our program," Latina said. "I think we're going to learn as much from him as he learns from us.

"You look at what Michael has been through and how positive and determined he is and it gives you some perspective. It gives you a perspective of gratitude and humility and it helps you appreciate how lucky you are. Those are just great reminders for our players and coaches"

Sacred Heart University has worked with Team IMPACT for the past three years, matching six children across its men's basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, and men's wrestling teams.

"We are excited to see Michael officially join the Pioneer family," said Danielle Hardee, Regional Director of Programs, Northeast at Team IMPACT. "We are proud to partner with Sacred Heart University, their athletic department and coaching staff to create lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes between student-athletes and their Team IMPACT teammates."

Team IMPACT, a national non-profit organization, has developed a unique multiyear program that matches children facing serious illnesses and disabilities with college athletic teams across the country. Based on a clinical model, Team IMPACT guides a symbiotic relationship between teams and children focused on socialization, empowerment, and resilience.
