New Associate Head Coach was in Washington Capitals' Organization
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey head coach C.J. Marottolo announced the addition of Steve Bergin as the new associate head coach of the program. He previously coached under Marottolo during the 2020-21 season.
"We are thrilled to have Steve return to our coaching staff," said Marottolo. "He has rapidly climbed the ladder and is highly respected in both the college and professional coaching circles."
Bergin previously served as an assistant coach of the Hershey Bears, an American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals during the 2021 season. The Bears finished tied for fourth in the Atlantic Division and qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs.
"I am beyond excited to be back with the SHU family and part of the coaching staff again," Bergin said.
Prior to his first stint at SHU, he was the head coach of the South Carolina Stingrays, the Capitals' ECHL affiliate. Bergin was named ECHL Coach of the Year for the 2019-20 season when he led the Stingrays to a 44-14-4 record, including a 25-5-4 road mark that are second most road wins in ECHL history. The Stingrays also led the ECHL in team defense, allowing a league-low of 2.37 goals per game, and tied for the best winning percentage in the league.
The Groton, Mass., native skated for the University of Connecticut from 2007 to 2011 and was team captain his senior year. He went on to play minor league hockey for five seasons.
Bergin's responsibilities at SHU include recruiting, working with the team's defensemen, running the penalty kill, assisting in practice and game-planning and quarterbacking all video operations.
