MILFORD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University men's golf put the finishing touches on its victory in the SHU Fall Classic, hosted at the Great River Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon, winning the event by five strokes over second-place Rhode Island.
Sacred Heart A capped one of its best performances ever at its home course, posting a final score of 865 (+1) over 54 holes to earn the team victory. The Pioneers stayed within 10 strokes in all three rounds, shooting 291-282-292 as a team. Rhode Island rallied with a six-under 282 today but could not catch SHU. Sacred Heart B climbed the leaderboard to finish fifth out of 10 teams with a combined score of 930 (+66).
On the individual leaderboard, Marcus Lim led the way for Sacred Heart in second. The Selangor, Malaysia, native finished the event with a two-under score of 214 (71-70-73). Lim finished second to URI's Bryson Richards after he pulled off a final-round comeback.
Lim was joined in the top five by Mike Rothberg and Pablo Lacayo. He finished tied for third with a combined score of 215 (-1). Lacayo was in contention yesterday after carding the tournament's best round (67), but he ultimately finished in a tie for fifth with a score of 221 (+5).
Jason Pelley also cracked the top 10 in seventh, finishing with a combined score of 222 (+6).
The next three Pioneers all finished within one stroke of each other. Conor Handley (+12) led the group in T15th following his outstanding four-under 68 in round three. Alex Turlik placed next in T17th with a final score of 229 (+13). Eoin Freeman rounded out the group in T21st with a 230 (+14) for the event.
SHU's final two golfers were Sho Suzuki and Kevin Morris in T28th and T38th, respectively. Suzuki ended the tournament with a score of 234 (+18) following his even-par round three. Morris carded a 243 (+27), with his best round also coming on the event's final day.
