Petrovich was named Player of the Week, while Kowalski was tabbed Pitcher of the Week
SOMERSET, N.J. – After sweeping perennial Northeast Conference powerhouse Saint Francis over the weekend, Sacred Heart University softball's Amy Petrovich and Sam Kowalski were named the NEC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers have been a staple in the NEC weekly awards this season, as SHU has collected eight honors so far in 2023. Petrovich takes home her first career weekly nod, while Kowalski was tabbed the Rookie of the Week on February 21.
Petrovich went an astounding .800 (8-for-10) at the plate in the sweep of the Red Flash, who owns one of the most dangerous pitching staffs in the conference. The graduate student finished the weekend with two runs, five RBI, a triple, and a stolen base while maintaining a .800/.818/1.000 slash line.
Petrovich started the series by going 4-for-4 in the opener with a bases-clearing triple in the second inning that swung momentum in the Pios' favor. The East Hanover, N.J., native tallied two hits in the next two contests to cap her outstanding weekend.
Kowalski posted complete-game victories in her two appearances during the series, finishing with a 2-0 record and a 1.50 ERA over 14.0 innings. The first year hurler struck out seven batters over the two wins while holding the stout SFU offense to a .255 batting average.
In game two of the series, Kowalski allowed three earned runs over seven innings to lead SHU to a 7-4 victory. The highlight of the San Clemente, Calif., native's weekend came in game three on Saturday, when she tallied her second complete-game shutout of the season. She held the Red Flash to five hits over seven to earn the win, retiring the side in order in the seventh in the rain.
The Pios will take a break from NEC play this Wednesday for a road doubleheader at Yale. The first game of the twin bill is slated to start at 2 p.m. in New Haven.
