Last few holes spoil the day at UGA
SCOREBOARD
ATHENS, Ga. – It was a day of mixed results as the Sacred Heart Women's Golf Team opened play at the 2023 Athens NCAA Regional on the University of Georgia course.
The Pios carded a 313, which was 25 over par on a day of mixed weather that finished with sunny and hot conditions. Jessie Burch, a first year from Dublin, Calif., led the team with a 76 that included a pair of birdies on the back side. She made three great par saves on that side and now sits 39th overall on the individual leaderboard.
Senior captain Kailee Welch, who had a pair of birdies on long putts, and junior Margot Rouquette shot 77. Welch rolled in a 30-footer on 12 when the going was good for the team from the Northeast.
The top five teams and one individual from a non-advancing team head to the national championships in Arizona later this month. SHU is 12th, one shot out of 11th, but 11 strokes shy of 10th place with two rounds remaining.
The Pioneers, who were an hour late starting off the 10th tee because of a storm that included heavy rain, were playing with Furman and Augusta today in an opening round thoroughly dominated by the home team Georgia Bulldogs, the only squad under par with a 279 (-9).
Most of the five SHU players competing today were at the Stanford Regional in 2022 and know what it takes to improve over the 54-hole NCAA event.
"I liked the way we played our first nine or 10 holes collectively, but we weren't able to sustain that and struggled on the last few," said SHU Head Coach Matt McGreevy. "We have day two to look forward to with a chance to make big improvements as a team."
