Pios open season in New Jersey
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (October 8, 2024) – An 18th-place finish for Maria Alvim (Lisbon, Portugal) in the Division I epee competition highlighted the season-opening appearance for the Sacred Heart University women's fencing team at this weekend's North American Cup, held at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
The Pioneers had two competitors in action across three epee events in the Garden State over the weekend, and were able to advance to the knockout rounds in all three events. Alvim finished 18th, out of 222 competitors, after exiting in the round of 32 of the DI epee tournament. Gabrielle Phelan (Smithtown, N.Y.) competed in the DII epee event, where she advanced to round of 128 and finished 74th, out of 158 fencers. Phelan was also in action in the junior epee, where she advanced to the round of 256 and finished 139th, out of 275 competitors.
SHU is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Temple Open in Philadelphia.
