Gaberkorn earns All-Conference accolades as well
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 26, 2024) – Senior Maria Alvim (Lisbon, Portugal) finished 18-1 over the weekend to take first place in the epee competition, as the Sacred Heart University women's fencing team competed at the NFC Championship, hosted by Brown. Alvim earned All-Conference First Team honors for her work, leading two Pioneers to earn All-NFC accolades.
Alvim was joined by fellow epee competitor, junior Nadia Gaberkorn (Marlboro, N.J.), who took home All-NFC Second Team honors
The NFC awards All-Conference laurels to the top six finishers in each event at the meet. The top three finishers land on the First Team, while the next three take Second Team plaudits.
Alvim's 18-1 record represented a .947 winning percentage and put her safely clear of Wagner's Katerina Cervenkova (19-3) at the top of the epee standings. Gaberkorn finished fifth in the discipline, with a 14-7 record.
Junior Valery Krylova (Shelton, Conn.) also finished over .500 over the weekend for the Pioneers, with a 16-11 record to finish 13th in the sabre.
As a team, SHU went 2-9 at the event, with a 19-3 win over Wheaton (Mass.) and an 14-13 victory over Vassar.
SHU is back in action on Dec. 8 at the Tradition Meet, hosted by Vassar in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
