SHU earns Team Sportsmanship Award for fourth straight year
WINTHROP, Mass. (March 19, 2024) – For the second straight year, graduate student co-captain Braeden Tuck (Calgary, Alberta) of the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team has been named as the Atlantic Hockey Association's Individual Sportsmanship Award recipient, as announced on Tuesday afternoon by the league office. In addition, the Pios took home the AHA's Team Sportsmanship Award for the fourth straight year.
The AHA year-end awards were nominated and voted on by the league's head coaches.
Tuck was, once again, one of the least-penalized players on the least-penalized team in Atlantic Hockey, as he was whistled for just a trio of minor penalties while playing in 33 of SHU's 36 games. Over the course of his five seasons in a Pioneer uniform, he played in 157 of the team's 160 games and spent only 14 minutes in the penalty box, on seven minor penalties. Tuck tallied 17 points this winter on six goals and 11 assists. He chipped in a pair of power-play goals along the way and recorded 41 shots on goal. The 157 career games played established a new program record.
As a team, Sacred Heart took just 136 penalties totaling 327 minutes over the course of 36 games. That works out to averages of 3.8 penalties and 9.08 minutes per game, which made the Pios the most-disciplined team in Atlantic Hockey. SHU also collected the Team Sportsmanship Award in 2019-20, 2021-22 and 2022-23. The award was not presented in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign.
The Pios finished the season third place in Atlantic Hockey.
