Pios looking to earn second trophy of the spring
NEC Release
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — On the heels of a second-place finish at the Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Championships in mid-February, the Sacred Heart University women's track and field team is picked to finish third in the conference for this season's outdoor portion of the schedule, the conference announced Friday.
The Pioneers embark on the outdoor slate following an impressive indoor campaign with SHU claiming its first indoor trophy since 2018 with its second-place finish at the NEC Indoor Championships. After leading all nine competing teams through the first day of competition, the Pioneers battled on the track to claim a runner-up title on day two.
SHU returns two medalists from last season's squad including junior Jenna Engels and senior Keegan Pepin. Engels, who claimed second-place at NEC Indoor's and earned a career-best mark of 3.69 meters at New England's earlier this year, claimed gold in the pole vault last season while Pepin took third place in the women's 3000m steeplechase.
The Red & White, who improved upon its initial preseason placement in the indoor season, will be poised to make a run for the gold this spring with a majority of it point-scorers from the Indoor season back in action in the coming weeks. The Pioneers will race in at least 11 meets this spring beginning with the Rider University 5-Way on Friday, March 22. More information on the upcoming season can be found at sacredheartpioneers.com.
