El Chaib takes medalist honors in dominant fashion
GRASONVILLE, Md. – The Sacred Heart University women's golf team put the finishing touches on a win at the JEL Intercollegiate at Prospect Bay on Saturday, hosted by La Salle at the Prospect Bay Golf Club in Grasonville, Md.
The Pioneers cleared the field by 15 strokes with a 54-hole score of 891 (+27). SHU opened with scores of 299 and 298 on day one before performing even better in round three with a six-over 294. Second-place Boston College finished with a 906 (+42), while Navy took third (+69). The win is Sacred Heart's first since winning the SHU Fall Classic in October.
Chantal El Chaib took medalist honors, lapping the field with a 212 (-4), nine strokes ahead of her next-closest competitor. She topped her round of the tournament, a two-under 70 yesterday, with a four-under 68 in round three. The senior's 68 is her best round this season, as she carded six birdies in the round.
Margot Rouquette and Kailee Welch rounded out a top-three for the Pioneers, as Rouquette took runner-up and Welch finished third. Rouquette finished her tournament with a 221 (+5). She posted a two-over 74 today, her second round with a 74 this tournament, to go along with a round-one 73.
Welch climbed two spots on the leaderboard, tying for third with a 10-over 226. She posted her best round of the tournament Saturday with a one-over 73.
Jessie Burch was SHU's next-highest finisher in a tie for 13th. An 80 (+8) settled her score at 234 (+18).
Rounding out Sacred Heart's golfers was Jensie Nicholas and Maya Robilio in T22nd and T33rd. Nicholas carded a 79 (+7) today, finishing with a 243 (+27). Robilio with an 81 (+9), her best round of the tournament, for a tournament score of 248 (+32).
The Pioneers will have a week off before opening the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday, April 6, at the Rutgers Golf Club in Piscataway N.J.
