FAIRFIELD, Conn.—
Alex Sobel has been named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week following his performance last week as the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team finished 2-0 in the final week of the regular season. Sobel brings in his first weekly award of the season.
Sobel averaged 17.0 points per game, along with 11.0 rebounds per game. He had back-to-back double-doubles to lead the Pioneers to a 2-0 week.
Against Stonehill, the senior forward shot 6-for-9 from the field and had two assists, two steals, and one block. In SHU's win over Merrimack, Sobel was one of three players with 20 or more points as he shot 9-for-13 from the field, dished out four assists, tallied a pair of steals, and had three blocked shots.
Sobel is currently fifth in the nation in blocks with 84 and sixth in blocks per game at 2.80.
The Pioneers will host sixth-seeded Wagner for the second straight year in an NEC quarterfinal on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 pm.
Sacred Heart finished the regular season with a 10-6 record, its best conference record since 2019-20, securing the third seed in the NEC Tournament, their best seeding in the NEC Tournament since also taking the third seed in the 2020-21 season. SHU has finished in the top four in the NEC in five of the last six seasons.
