FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University head football coach Mark Nofri has named his team captains for the upcoming 2024 season. Tyreke Brown, Marques Mason, Myles Talley, Jalen Madison, and Payton Rhoades, all of whom have demonstrated exceptional skills and leadership, have been chosen as the captains.
"I am very pleased to announce our team captains for the upcoming 2024 season," said Coach Nofri. "I am very excited and proud to have these fine young men represent SHU football. Not only are they outstanding players, but more importantly, they are high-character kids who represent the true meaning of student-athletes both on and off the field."
A steady contributor throughout his SHU career, Brown returns to Campus Field to spearhead a solid defensive unit. Last season with the Pioneers, Brown played in nine games and finished with 47 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a team-leading 10.0 tackles-for-loss. The Penns Grove, N.J. native earned his first All-NEC Second Team nod.
Madison took a giant leap in 2023, rushing for 645 yards on 139 carries and scoring four touchdowns. The Stratford, Conn. native added 11 receptions for 60 yards to his 705 all-purpose yards in 11 games last season. To date as a Pioneer, Madison has totaled 1,123 career rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
Mason, a defensive back, finished the 2023 campaign with 56 total tackles, including a career-high 12 against FBS opponent UCONN, ranking him second on the team. He also ranked second in interceptions with three for a total return of 25 yards.
Rhoades enjoyed a breakout 2023 season, during which he recorded a career-high 20 receptions for 217 yards. The Lindale, Ga. native's first career touchdown was tallied in the Pioneers' 37-34 road win over Saint Francis (Pa.). Rhoades also saw action on the defensive side of the ball, recording eight total tackles.
Wrapping up the team captain group is Talley, a linebacker from Hatfield, Pa. Another defensive force for the Pioneers, he recorded 38 tackles, including a season-high seven against Central Conn. State, a tackle for loss, and 0.5 sacks.
The Pioneers open the 2024 campaign on Saturday, August 31, with their home opener against Delaware State. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Campus Field.
