
Women’s Golf Opens NEC Championship in Lead

El Chaib paces the field after carding a 66 (-4)
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Sacred Heart University women's golf team's quest for a third straight Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship got off on the right foot on Friday. The Pioneers opened the 2024 NEC Championship, held at the Lake View Course at Callaway Resort Gardens & Golf, in first place after round one.
The Pioneers carded a round-one score of 282 (+2) this afternoon, leading second-place LIU (288) by six strokes. Howard (295) sits in third place, while FDU (299) and Merrimack (304) round out the top five.
Chantal El Chaib leads all players after the first day, carding a four-under 66 to build a three-stroke lead in the medalist race. The defending NEC Player of the Year tallied five birdies on the day to one bogie.
Kailee Welch joined El Chaib in the top three with an even-par 70 to sit in third. The graduate student birdied four of her first 10 holes, finishing with five in the round.
Margot Rouquette and Maya Robilio rounded out SHU's scoring four in T8th and T11th, respectively. Rouquette posted a two-over 72 this afternoon, with birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. Robilio recorded a 74 (+4), tallying a birdied on the par-five 15th.
Jessie Burch concluded the Pios' competitors today, sitting in a tie for 30th with a score of 79 (+9).
The Pioneers return to the Lake View Course tomorrow morning for round two of the three-day event.
