Strong day in throws encapsulates 20 top-10 finishes
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Daniel Blatman's silver-medal outing in the discus was part of 20 top-10 finishes for the Sacred Heart University men's track and field team as it wrapped up regular season competition at the Southern Connecticut State University James Barber Invitational on Saturday, April 27. The Pioneers accrued 113 points en route to a third-place team finish behind the hosts, SCSU and the University of New Haven.
Blatman earned two of SHU's six podium placements following his second-place finish in the discus. The senior thrower grabbed the silver with a mark of 39.15m on his second throw in the event before claiming third place in the hammer throw on his first attempt with a mark of 49.80m. First year thrower Joshua Wood nudged ahead of Blatman and claimed the silver in hammer throw with a mark of 50.19m on his fourth attempt. Cole Decusati rounded out the scorers for SHU in the event with an eighth-place finish.
The Pios grabbed top-10 finishes in the mid-distance as James Moore earned third place in the 800m run, finishing in 2:01.57, while Kevin Martin scored with an eighth-place finish. In the 1500m, Alexander Rosario claimed seventh with a time of 4:34.67.
SHU also had strong showings in the remainder of the track portion as Kevin Dorio claimed fourth place in the 110 hurdles, finishing with a personal-best time of 17.27 seconds. IN the 4x100m relay, the quartet of Damon Wilson, Rafael Mahario, Benjamin Healy and Colin Brown claimed second place with a season-best time of 41.88 seconds.
In the field, SHU claimed a multitude of points with five top-10 finishes in jumps. In the triple jump, sophomore Hunter Harris grabbed sixth with a. mark of 11.34m on his only scored attempt while Langston Pearson earned a fifth-place clearance in the high jump after clearing 1.67m. Pearson later claimed a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.59m on his first attempt. In the pole vault, Healy claimed fourth place with a clearance of 3.60m while Kelvin Paulino-Acosta grabbed seventh after clearing 3.00m.
Following SHU's excellence in discus and hammer throw, the Pios claimed three more top-10 finishes as Connor Wilkinson-Feickert grabbed fifth-place in shot put while Mason Marino and Devin DiMartino earned fourth and fifth in the javelin throw to conclude the meet for the Pioneers.
