Pios claim 16 podiums in regular season finale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — With 16 podium placements, the Sacred Heart University women's track and field team concluded its regular season schedule with a first-place team finish at the Southern Connecticut State University James Barber Invitational on Saturday, April 27. The Pioneers won out a tight-knit battle with the hosts, SCSU, taking the meet by one point with a score of 201 compared to SCSU's 200.
The Pioneers started the track portion off without skipping a beat, claiming the top spot in two of the three events the Pios had athletes in. First year Carissa Weber claimed her first-ever event win, claiming first in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.37 while fellow Pios Emma Doran and Mia Breauninger grabbed sixth and ninth, respectively. In the 1500, Ava Hill, Breauninger, Taylor Mason and Leila DeVoe all claimed valuable points for the Red & White with top-10 finishes.
The Pios book-ended the medal placements in the 100m hurdles as Madeline Archangelo took the event win with a time of 14.73 seconds while first year Cali Terranova grabbed third with a time of 15.28 seconds. Elsewhere in the event, Amanda Galasso and Ariyana Jackson followed Terranova in fourth and fifth, respectively, while Kimora Johnson took seventh.
SHU continued to earn valuable points with a dominant showing in the field, claiming two medal sweeps en route to 13 medal placements throughout the eight field events. In the high jump, the Pios took all four top spots highlighted by Lauryn Piccirelli's first place clearance of 1.57m. Ava Coscia, Kayleigh Troy and Susan Porto followed suit from second to fourth to grab valuable points. In the pole vault, Jenna Engels grabbed the gold with a clearing of 3.55m in front of Jennifer Pasram and Sophia DeMillio who grabbed second and third, respectively, In total, eight jumpers placed in the top-10 in the event for SHU.
The Red & White continued to dominate the field in jumps after grabbing two medals in the long jump as Archangelo grabbed her second medal finish of the afternoon with a mark of 5.42m on her second jump to claim second. Kaylee Stenderowicz took third with a mark of 5.33m on her final jump before grabbing second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.39m on her final jump as part of a two-medal outing for the Pioneer senior.
In throws, Jackson grabbed second place in the shot put with a mark of 11.89m in her fifth throw while Zaida Witkowski grabbed fourth in the event. Witkowski later led the SHU contingency in the discus with a mark of 35.42m to claim second place. First year thrower Trinity Hall grabbed third in the event after setting a mark of 34.15m on her first throw. SHU claimed its final medal of the afternoon as Archangelo grabbed second in the javelin, setting a personal-best mark of 35.93m on her fifth throw to snatch the silver medal as the Pios secured their third, first-place team finish of the outdoor season.
