Pios grab medals in three events to conclude season
WORCESTER, Mass. — The Scared Heart University men's track and field team wrapped up its 2024 outdoor schedule with a five-medal outing at the NEICAAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the College of the Holy Cross that concluded on Saturday, May 11. The Pioneers finished with 29 total team points, which secured a top-10 finish out of the 39 scoring teams.
The Pioneers were led by junior Rafael Mahario who earned SHU's lone points in sprints, grabbing first place in the prelims of the 400m dash before ultimately finishing in third place in finals, grabbing the bronze medal with a time of 48.01 seconds. The third-place finish was the fourth time this outdoor season that Mahario had earned a medal in the 400m.
The Pioneers also earned a strong showing in the mid-distance and distance portions from Lance Hayes and Edward Tristine. Hayes grabbed a top-10 finish and secured points in the 800m finishing in seventh with a time of 1:54.88 while Tristine grabbed eighth place in the 5000m run, finishing in 15:03.54 which set a new personal-best in a Pioneer uniform.
The Pioneers grabbed their second medal outing of the meet with a win in the 4x400 relay as the quartet of Mahario, Hayes, Colin Brown and Connor Meikle took the gold with a season-best time of 3:13.46 seconds.
