SHU went 10-3 at the event and earned wins against five ranked teams
NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Sacred Heart University bowling team finished the star-studded Northeast Classic, which SHU hosted this weekend in New Castle, Del., in 17th place after posting a 10-3 overall record.
The Pioneers' 17th-place showing is very impressive, considering the stacked field at the event. The Northeast Classic featured 38 teams, 22 of which are ranked by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). Out of the 22 ranked teams, all of the top-15 teams in the country competed, including the No. 11 Pioneers.
Sacred Heart finished the tournament with a 10-3 overall record, falling twice to No. 22 Delaware State and once to No. 1 Vanderbilt. On the other hand, SHU racked up five wins against nationally-ranked opponents.
The Pios started the event by going 4-1 in baker matches on Friday. The opening day was highlighted by wins over No. 7 Wichita State (1,001-959) and No. 12 Louisiana Tech (983-898).
SHU also went 4-1 on Saturday in traditional matches. The Pioneers started the day with a high-scoring 1,045-1,002 over No. 6 Stephen F. Austin. Paige Donovan shined brightest in the big win, scoring 253 against the Lumberjacks. Sacred Heart also tallied traditional victories over Molloy, Holy Family and LIU, while its loss was a hard-fought 983-905 setback to No. 1 Vanderbilt.
Donovan led the way for the Pioneers in the individual matches, with an average of 209.00 in all five contests. Madilyn Yockel also maintained a 200+ average with a mark of 200.50 in four matches.
The Pioneers opened championship Sunday with a 4-1 setback to the pesky Hornets. SHU bounced back quickly to defeat former conference foe No. 19 Merrimack 4-2 to earn a spot in the seventh-place match. The Pios handed fellow former NEC rival No. 14 Duquesne a 4-2 defeat to clinch seventh.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 25, to take part in the New England Cup in East Providence, R.I.
