Adekunle named Field Rookie of the Meet
The Armory Track and Field Center hosted two days of competition and seventeen events. This was the Pioneers' first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The final day of the competition saw a lot of action, as SHU finished third in the team rankings with 124.5 points.
Magdalena Brogioli, Madeline Archengelo, Sierra Thompson, and Ariyana Jackson all qualified for the 60m hurdles finals. Brogioli secured her second event win of the meet running an 8.64. Archangelo (8.86), Thompson (9.00), and Jackson (9.03) followed in fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively. Brogioli wasn't done yet as she qualified alongside Nyahingiva Musa in the 60-meter dash finals. Musa finished in 7.76 running just behind Brogioli in 7.74.
The Pioneers had multiple point-scorers in the shot put as four more went on to qualify for the shot put finals. Ariyana Jackson grabbed another top-eight performance finishing in fifth. Suzan Adekunle came in seventh coming off her second-place finish in the weight throw a day prior. First-years Caroline Herlihy and Elena Chaplin completed the day in second and third.
Annalise Nassey lived up to the moment as her last attempt in the triple jump would be the leap that put her in medal contention. Nassey's jump of 11.71m, a new personal best for her, secured her third place. Grace Sousa went on to claim fourth in the 3K running a 9:50.87.
Suzan Adekunle was named Field Rookie of the Meet for her achievements in the weight throw and shot put giving her the first MAAC award in Sacred Heart track history.
The Pioneers are back in action on Mar. 7-8 at the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
