Alvim Selected to Compete in NCAA Fencing Championship

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart's Maria Alvim is one of 144 competitors selected to compete in the 2025 NCAA Fencing Championships later this month. Alvim will compete in epee at the championship, which will be hosted by Penn State at its Multi-Sport Facility in University Park, Pa., March 20-23.

Alvim, from Lisbon, Portugal, competed at the NCAA Regionals last Sunday at Tufts and finished 19th. In February, Alvim fenced at the Senior World Cup in Barcelona Spain, and in November, she finished 18-1 to take first place in epee at the NFC Championship, earning First Team All-Conference honors.

The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of six weapons (men's épée, men's foil, men's sabre, women's épée, women's foil and women's sabre).

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
