Goalie, Rookie of the Year to be Named Tuesday
BOSTON, Mass. – Ajeet Gundarah has been named a finalist for both the Atlantic Hockey America Goalie of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards, both of which will be named next Tuesday.
Gundarah stopped 113 of 118 shots and did not allow a power-play goal over three Atlantic Hockey America quarterfinal series contests against Air Force last weekend as Sacred Heart advanced to the next round.
SHU's rookie goalie earned conference rookie of the week honors for that performance, which included a career-high 55 saves in game two, a double overtime contest.
Gundarah's 1.85 goals against and .937 save percentage are tops among Division I freshmen and sixth and fourth overall nationally. SHU's rookie, a Mike Richter Award Watch List member, now has three AHA Goalie of the Week honors to go along with three rookie of the week selections and a goalie of the month award.
The former Surrey Eagle (BCHL) made his collegiate debut in relief against Bentley on Nov. 2, playing the last 38 minutes and stopping 11 of 13 shots. That appearance came without pre-season practice or an exhibition event due to a summer injury. Gundarah has played in 24 of the 37 games and posted a 16-5-3 record.
The Richmond, B.C., native and his Pios take on Bentley this weekend in the conference semifinals at Martire Family Arena. It's a best-of-three series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
