Phillips, Rothberg and Lacayo were all recognized by the conference
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – After posting outstanding first seasons in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Sacred Heart University men's golfers Ethan Phillips, Mike Rothberg and Pablo Lacayo were all named First Team All-MAAC, as announced on Wednesday morning.
The trio has been integral to the Pioneers this season, as the team was picked as the preseason favorites in the conference before the spring season began. Sacred Heart has collected three wins and five top-five finishes over nine tournaments. SHU's three wins this year is triple last season's mark. The Pios were the lone team with three First Teamers and joined Fairfield as the only two teams with three or more total selections.
Phillips, the lone unanimous selection on both the men's and women's sides, has had a fantastic debut campaign with the Pioneers. The graduate transfer from Belleville, Ontario, owns a 73.2 average on the season in 21 rounds and was the MAAC Golfer of the Week on March 12. He has collected a win at the SHU Spring Break Invite and a third at the Red Bandana Invitational.
Rothberg has found similar success in his junior campaign, owning a win and third place to go along with a MAAC Golfer of the Week honor. The local product from Fairfield maintains a 72.9 average over 21 rounds, with his win coming at the Ryan Lee Intercollegiate and his third place coming at the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational about a week ago.
Lacayo finished the regular season with a similar average, sitting at 73.3 in 21 rounds. The junior from Managua, Nicaragua, finished a season-best third at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate and was fourth at the season-opening Red Bandanna Invitational.
In addition to All-MAAC honors, Jack Delaney, Eoin Freeman, Lacayo, James Murray, Jason Pelley, Phillips, Rothberg, Sho Suzuki, Alex Turlik and Robby Zyskowski III were tabbed to the 2025 MAAC Men's Golf All-Academic Team this morning.
The Pioneers will next head to the three-day MAAC Championship, which spans Thursday-Saturday, Apr. 17-19, at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
