Field Hockey Falls to Bucknell in Season Opener

Mendrzycki scores first collegiate goal
NEW HAVEN, Conn.— Senior Lizzie Mendrzycki netted her first career goal as the Sacred Heart University field hockey team fell to Bucknell 2-1 in the season opener at home at Johnson Field.

Of Note:
After a scoreless opening frame, all goals came in the second quarter.
Bucknell scored first in the 22nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers were awarded a penalty corner sent in by Amelia Pellegrini. Junior Blaire Sparks set up Mendrzycki to put away her first career goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Minutes later, the Bison were also awarded a penalty corner and converted it to take a 2-1 lead, which would hold for the final score.
The Pioneers had four corners compared to Bucknell's two. SHU put pressure on the Bison in the final frame, outscoring the visitors 5-2, but Bucknell's goalkeeper came up with three clutch saves to hold off the Pios.

Sacred Heart is back in action with its first road trip of the season, traveling to Hofstra on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 12 pm.
