FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team battled Quinnipiac to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Park Ave Field. How it Happened:
The Pioneers set the tone early, putting pressure on the Quinnipiac defense and creating multiple chances in the opening half. Losfablos and Brady Poor each recorded an attempt on goal as Sacred Heart looked to get on the scoreboard. The Pioneers' persistence paid off late in the first half when Istambouli converted a free kick in the 44th minute, sending his shot over the fingertips of Alexander Hansen to give SHU a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.
Quinnipiac responded shortly after the half, tying the game in the 54th minute. Bjorn Isfrid Jonasson connected with a pass from Sixten Karlsson and finished similarly to Istambouli, into the upper right corner over Suarez to bring the Bobcats level.
With the score tied, the Pioneers continued to fight for another goal, earning several corner kicks and creating opportunities through Ivan Morcillo, Losfablos, Poor, and Daniel Pineda. Hansen denied a shot attempt from Pineda late in the half, while Suarez made key stops to keep Quinnipiac from taking the lead. Despite late pressure and corner kicks on both ends of the field, neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the match finished as a 1-1 draw. Â
Of Note:
- Sacred Heart held a 14-7 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks
- Istambouli scored his second goal of the season off a free kick, while Suarez finished the game with three saves
The Pioneers head to Niagara University on Saturday, October 17, to take on the Purple Eagles with a 4 PM kickoff
