The Pios tallied a 40-8 lead in shots to win their preseason finale, 3-0
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Vitaly Levyy scored a pair of first period goals to lead the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team to a 3-0 shutout win over Carleton in the team's preseason finale on Sunday at the Martire Family Arena.Â
Levyy stole the show in the first period, starting things off with a goal 3:59 into the game. Emmanuel Vermette started the play with a dangle in front of the net before finding an open Levyy left of the crease.Â
Levyy netted his second of the period at 14:11, again coming up big in front of the crease. This time, the junior rolled in front of the goal after winning the faceoff then tipping a Chase Ramsay shot by the netminder.Â
The Pios maintained their 2-0 lead through the second period, continuing to dominate the action, but just not sneaking any goals across. SHU dominated play through the first 40 minutes, owning a 25-6 lead in shots.Â
SHU's onslaught of shots continued in the third period, as the team ended the game with a 40-8 advantage in shots on goal. Unlike the second, however, the Pios cashed in, in the third period. With the Ravens' net empty, Vermette ice the SHU shutout with an unassisted strike at 19:13 to make it 3-0 Pioneers.Â
In the crease for SHU, Nils Wallstrom and Jack Spicer split responsibilities. Wallstrom finished with six saves, while Spicer tallied two.Â
