Farell Hits 1,000 Career Points as Pioneers Defeat Rider

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Yann Farell scored his 1,000th career point, and six Pioneers finished in double figures as the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team defeated Rider, 86–75, on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at the Pitt Center. The win secured the season sweep of the Broncs for SHU.

How It Happened
After several back-and-forth possessions to open the game, a Nyle Ralph-Beyer pull-up jumper and an Abdou Yadd three-pointer helped SHU take a 16–11 lead. Rider trimmed the deficit to three, but a Ralph-Beyer triple sparked a 16–2 Pioneer run, extending the advantage to 32–15 with 8:08 remaining in the first half.
Dashon Gittens converted a layup and completed an and-one to push the lead to 40–19 at the 4:31 mark. Rider cut the deficit to 16 in the final minute of the half, but Anquan Hill drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer to send Sacred Heart into the break ahead, 49–30.
The Pioneers maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half before Rider made a late push. Back-to-back three-pointers and a layup pulled the Broncs within five, 72–67, with 4:54 to play. Hill answered with a layup, though Rider kept the margin at five on the ensuing possession.
Following a media timeout, Hill drew contact that was upgraded to a flagrant foul. He knocked down both free throws and, on the ensuing possession, grabbed an offensive rebound and finished through contact for an and-one. The three-point play pushed SHU back in front by double digits, 79–69, with 2:14 remaining.
At the 1:15 mark, Hill converted another three-point play to extend the lead to 84–70. Rider pulled within 11 twice in the final 30 seconds, but Sacred Heart closed it out for the 86–75 victory.
SHU shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the field, connected on 12 three-pointers, and outrebounded Rider, 38–35.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Friday, Feb. 20, making the short trip across town to face rival Fairfield University at 7:00 p.m.
