The Pios have won the event in all four years of its existence
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – For the fourth straight year, the Sacred Heart University bowling team won the New England Cup, hosted by Bryant on Sunday in Smithfield, R.I.
The tournament features the four New England teams in Sacred Heart, Bryant, Merrimack and Saint Anselm. The teams first played a round-robin before the two teams that made the championship match were determined by win-loss record. The first three matches are traditional, while the champion is crowned in a five-game baker match.
The Pioneers went 4-0 at the event to claim first place for the fourth consecutive year. SHU has won the New England Cup every year since its inception.
Sacred Heart started Sunday with a 1,070-949 win over No. 24 Bryant before rolling over Saint A's by a 912 final score in the second match. Hope Bunk was the high scorer in both matches with scores of 257 and 165, respectively.
The Pios finished round robin play with a 1,070-726 win over Merrimack, setting up a rematch against the Bulldogs in the championship. SHU took advantage of a slow Bryant start to storm ahead by 119 pins after two games. Sacred Heart was ready for a Bulldog comeback attempt, as the team withheld strong Bryant performances in the fourth and fifth games to secure a 968-926 victory.
After team play, the programs took part in an eight-person singles tournament. Megan Prettyman won the singles competition, a single-elimination event, by defeating teammate Cira Arcangel in the final, 187-155.
The Pios will have a short break before resuming play on Friday, March 6, for the first of three days at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt in Smyrna, Tenn.
