SHU Mourns the Loss of Joe McGuigan

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University and the men's soccer program mourn the loss of former head coach and standout player Joe McGuigan, who passed away in early August.
A native of Scotland, McGuigan's impact on Sacred Heart men's soccer spanned more than three decades as both a student-athlete and coach. From 1968-72, he starred for the Pioneers and, in 1970, became the first All-American in SHU history. He remains one of the most accomplished players in program history, ranking among the all-time leaders in goals, assists, and points while rewriting the program's record book during his collegiate career.
McGuigan's success extended beyond the collegiate ranks, as he represented the United States at the 1971 Pan American Games and the 1972 Olympic Games.
Following his playing career, McGuigan returned to his alma mater as head coach of the men's soccer program, leading the Pioneers for 20 seasons from 1985-2004. He guided Sacred Heart through its transition from Division II to Division I while compiling 124 career wins, the most in program history at the time of his retirement. McGuigan was named New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year three times (1987, 1990, and 1992), became the first men's soccer coach in school history to reach 100 career victories in 1995, and was inducted into the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame in 2009.
In addition to leading the men's soccer program, McGuigan served SHU as head coach of the women's soccer and men's lacrosse programs during his tenure, then continued in an administrative role following his retirement from coaching.
Joe McGuigan's impact on Sacred Heart Athletics will be remembered for generations to come. The Pioneers will come together to celebrate his life and the lasting mark he left on the University with a special pregame tribute before the men's soccer preseason match on Saturday, August 15 at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will also be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15 at the Sacred Heart University Chapel. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former teammates, players, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
