NEW HAVEN, Conn. — With seven seconds remaining in regulation, first-year Lauren King scored the first goal of her career to tie the game and force overtime as the Sacred Heart University field hockey team opened NEC play against Quinnipiac on Friday evening. The Pioneers ultimately fell to the Bobcats, 2-1, in overtime.

Of Note:
Despite outshooting Quinnipiac 4-1, in the opening quarter, the Pioneers and Bobcats remained scoreless through the first 15 minutes.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Quinnipiac broke through to take a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart continued to apply pressure but was unable to find the back of the cage, heading into halftime trailing by one.

The Pioneers continued to control the offensive pressure in the third quarter, recording eight shots to Quinnipiac's one. However, Sacred Heart could not capitalize on its opportunities and entered the fourth quarter still trailing, 1-0.

The Pioneers continued to push for the equalizer throughout the final quarter. With four minutes remaining, senior goalkeeper Brianna Cooper was pulled in favor of an extra attacking player.

With time winding down, Emma Rose-Phillips put a shot on goal, but the Quinnipiac goalkeeper made the initial save. King collected the rebound and fired it into the cage with just seven seconds remaining, scoring the first goal of her career and sending the game to overtime.

Just over two minutes into the extra period, Quinnipiac was awarded a penalty corner. The Bobcats capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the game-winning goal to secure a 2-1 overtime victory and open NEC play with a win.

Cooper finished with three saves for the Pioneers. Sacred Heart outshot Quinnipiac, 18-11, and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.
