FAIRFIELD, CT (October 13, 2002) - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team dropped their fifth straight contest, falling to Bucknell University, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Bison built a 2-0 halftime lead and held on en route to their ninth win of 2002.
Sophomore midfielder Jonathan Hemmert opened the scoring at 31:56 when he blasted a shot from 35-yards out over the outstretched hands of SHU goalkeeper Jason Roeder (Independence, MN) for a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later, Hemmert served a perfect ball to the far post where Michael Lookingland II got his head on it and Erin Brunton nailed home the deflection.
The Bison looked to be in complete control but would have to buckle down on defense when Pioneer forward Franco Cartiera (New Britain, CT) cut the lead in half just over four minutes into the second half. Cartiera settled a Nick Loyd (Plymouth, MN) pass about 20-yards out and fired his shot over Bison goalie Adam Edwards in the top-right corner for his fifth goal of the season. It appeared that SHU would knot the game at 2-2 when senior Matthew Christianson (Danville, NJ) sent a direct kick sailing off the crossbar with about five minutes to play to all but end the Pioneers scoring chances. Sacred Heart outshot Bucknell 9-8 in the second half but failed to convert on any other scoring chances.
The loss drops Sacred Heart to 0-10-2 on the season.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, October 20th as they travel to Monmouth University to take on the Hawks in Northeast Conference action.
