After losing a heartbreaking 3-0 shutout to Canisius the night before, the Pioneers vowed to travel back to Fairfield with their two points. And they did. Revenge came in the form of breaking Mercyhurst's perfect MAAC record this season, shutting them out 5-0 on Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Les Hrapchak (Wakaw, SK) scored the game-winner from Chris Mokos (Lincoln Park, NJ) at the 14:28 mark of period two after a scoreless first. For the second time in two weeks, defenseman Hrapchak took a slapshot from the point to put the winning goal past an unsuspecting goaltender. Last week, he surprised Iona's Scott Galenza (Camrose, AB) with 1.6 seconds left in the contest.
Third period was up for grabs, and the Pioneers took hold and never let go, scoring four more goals in the final frame to sink the Lakers and tarnish their perfect league record. Marc-Andre Fournier (St. Nicholas, PQ) scored just 55 seconds into the period from Mokos. Seven minutes later, leading scorer Martin Paquet (St. Catherine, PQ) netted his 13th of the season from Mokos and Lloyd Tennant (Billings, MT). Mokos scored his third point of the game on a goal from Hrapchak after 11:33 of play in the third. Marks added a final Pioneer goal on the power play with seven minutes left in the contest to score his 103rd career point. Credited with the assists were Paquet and Fournier.
Goaltender Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) recorded 32 saves in the shutout, which earned him the ITECH-MAAC Goaltender of the Week award, taking the reign away from Laker netminder Peter Aubry, who held it for three weeks straight. Aubry took home the loss and 29 saves.
The Pioneers improved to 14-12-4 overall (14-7-3 MAAC), while the Lakers continue to hold strong at 21-8-3 (20-1-3 MAAC). The Pioneers travel to Worcester, MA on Friday, March 1 to face Holy Cross at 7 p.m. They return home on Saturday, March 2 to host AIC in the last regular-season match-up. Game-time is 7:30 at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
